It was the last ship ever to bring a cargo of African slaves to American soil. The Wanderer began life as a luxury racing yacht, but within a year was secretly converted into a slave ship, and--using the pennant of the New York Yacht Club as a diversion--sailed off to Africa.

More than a slaving venture, her journey defied the federal government and hurried the nation's descent into civil war/5(31). The Wanderer is an Old English poem preserved only in an anthology known as the Exeter Book, a manuscript dating from the late 10th century. It counts lines of alliterative verse.

I adored everything about this one, and I honestly wasn’t sure what I would think of it since the main couple here doesn’t even meet really until about half way through the 4/5. These books offer three different ways of conceptualizing modern European history. Mazower holds Europe’s divisions, competition, and violence as paramount, stating that, “The “Europe” of the European Union may be a promise or a delusion, but it is not a reality” (xiv).
